Local Couple Volunteers Around the World
Byram-based residents Jennifer and Craig Alsup will be embarking on an around the world (RTW) journey on July 5th. They are traveling to raise awareness of and provide direct support for various underprivileged persons around the world as well as to expand their own appreciation for the differing cultures that they will encounter. This will include ministering to the spiritual, emotional, and most basic needs (food, water, shelter, love) of persons around the world.
“This is a challenge like no other we have ever embarked on. We have never left the country for any sort of volunteer endeavor, we have been to few places outside of the United States, and we are fighting against the decline of the U.S. dollar to afford this trip.”
The couple has lived in Byram for the past 2 years. During this time, they have attended Country Woods and taken part in coaching Upward soccer at Country Woods. Jennifer lived in Waynesboro, MS before attending college at the University of Southern Mississippi where she received her B.S. in Psychology and Master’s degree in Public Health. Jennifer has worked at the Area Health Education Center at the University Hospital in Jackson as the Program Director for the state of Mississippi. She has also worked part-time as a Pharmacy Technician at Polk’s Discount Drugs in Byram. Craig lived in Raymond, MS before attending college at the University of Southern Mississippi where he received his B.S. in Psychology. He then attended Mississippi College and received his Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology. Craig has worked at SON Valley Intermediate Care Facility for Adults with Mental Retardation (ICF/MR) in Canton as the Staff Psychologist. He has also worked part-time as a Psychologist’s Assistant for Dr. John Jolly in Jackson. Both enjoy outdoor activities including various sports, kayaking, and hiking as well as participating in volunteer work and learning about the cultures and historical aspects of places around the globe.
The two will leave Jackson, MS on a Greyhound bus headed across country first and will fly from Los Angeles to the South Pacific before continuing into Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, South America, and Central America. The couple will visit and provide support for various orphanages, group homes, and other social service agencies as they move from location to location. They will be immersing themselves into the various cultures that they encounter through their work, home-stays, and visits to culturally and historically significant areas.
